Bethel Moravian Church

Sunday morning Kathy and I took a cab to the local Moravian church to attend services. We decided we had better do some online research before we left. We discovered that Moravian missionaries visited the Bethel area in the late 1880's- and started the first church in Bethel (Bethel is named for Bethlehem). We also learned about the origins of the Moravian star (one of the most recognized symbols of the Moravian church). It began as a geometry lesson in Moravian run schools, and now is the symbol of the church's Christmas season. If you look closely in the picture of the church steeple, you can see one hanging in the round window.

Third time, hopefully, is the charm. You'll have to show me how to Blog, since mine aren't coming through. Lauren and I sent one after the program on Tuesday and for some reason it didn't go. Dad just did something and he assures me it will go this time. Anyway, the town of Bethlehem, PA has one of the first schools in the colonies that allowed young ladies to attend. It was established by the Moravians and Martha Washington visited, hoping to have her nieces attend. It was impressive. I have a children's book that is about the early Morvaians too. Anyway, I have always loved their star. I didn't know its history though. Thanks. What was the service like that you and Cathy attended? I know in the book and during our tour, they talked about singing whenever they worked. Hope you get home without too many more weather interuptions. Love, Mom
